Scotland’s appeal as a wedding destination is unmatched. Its landscapes are incredibly diverse, ranging from the dramatic peaks of Glencoe to the peaceful shores of Loch Lomond. There’s a reason so many couples dream of getting married in Scotland surrounded by such raw natural beauty.
Of course, it’s not just about the scenery. Scotland offers so much history, and many of its castles and grand estates are available as wedding venues.
Beyond the visuals, Scotland has a charm all its own. From the warm welcome you’ll receive to the chance to incorporate local traditions like a ceilidh dance or handfasting ceremony, it’s a country that makes every couple feel at home.

Legal Requirements for Getting Married in Scotland
One of the first things you’ll need to sort out as an international couple is the legal side of things. Luckily, Scotland is known for being a relatively straightforward place to get married, but there are still some important steps to follow.
First, you’ll need to decide whether you’re having a religious, civil, or humanist ceremony, as this will affect your paperwork. Both religious and civil marriages are legally recognised in Scotland, and it’s worth noting that humanist ceremonies are also legally binding here which is a unique feature not available in many countries.
Next, you’ll need to complete a marriage notice form (known as an M10 form) and submit it to the registrar in the district where you’re getting married. This must be done at least 29 days before your wedding date, but I recommend doing it as early as possible to avoid any last-minute stress.
Along with your form, you’ll need to provide copies of your passports, birth certificates, and any relevant documents, such as a divorce decree if you’ve been married before.
Once your paperwork is approved, you’ll receive your marriage schedule, which you’ll need to bring to the ceremony.
After getting married in Scotland, it will be signed by you, your witnesses, and your officiant before being returned to the registrar to register your marriage officially.
